About Much Hadham

Much Hadham's colourful village sign shows a tranquil scene of village church standing to the side of the river, sheep grazing in a fresh green pasture, and woods, immediately proclaims to visitors the quaint, rural charm of this very pleasant village, found a few miles from Bishop's Stortford.

The village is quite large, with an attractive mixture of cottages and houses that are mostly fronted by pretty gardens. Some of these are thatched and date as far back as the 15th century. Others of a later date consist of timber frame, and there are charming russet-brick Victorian properties. It is an attractive scene with most of the village spread out from the long High Street, which runs along the valley of the River Ash.

Attractions in the village include the Forge Museum and Victorian Cottage Garden in the High Street. Here visitors can learn all about the history of blacksmiths throughout the centuries. Another, quite different attraction is the lovely village church dedicated to St. Andrew which is located at the northern end of the village.

The celebrated sculptor, Henry Moore lived close by. He resided in the village of Perry Green, and here visitors will find the Henry Moore Foundation, this is open at certain times of the year when visitors can see interesting displays of the great man's work.

Attractive, tidy streets and colourful well laid out gardens have earned for the village the coveted "Hertfordshire Best Kept Village" title for several years. Doubtless the enthusiasm of the villagers has greatly contributed to this, for in the summer months the village has an unusually high number of private gardens open to the public, with all proceeds going to charitable causes. There is a nursery for plant sales, this also has a charming four acre garden which for a small charge is open for public view.

Much Hadham makes for a pleasant day or afternoon out, it has charm and tranquillity in abundance, with leafy lanes leading towards other little hamlets and for resting following a stroll around there are two friendly hostelries at the centre of the village - The Bull and The Old Crown, both offer meals, beers, soft drinks and a variety of wines.

There are several "Hadham" villages in the area, Great Hadham lies to the north of Much Hadham and has a golf club, and then there is Little Hadham, Hadham Ford and Hadham Cross, all are of equal merit and delight.
